General instructions:

Because all of your writing is being published here, you should do whatever you need to do to make it accurate in terms of spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Misspelled words (or words not in the dictionary here) are underlined in red. Please repair any underscored words.

Do you have any questions about what you have read in this section of your book? If you do, start a new discussion topic. Type the basic question into the subject box. Add more information about your question in the message box. For example, you might want to quote part of the text and include the page number of the part you're asking about.

Remember to look at other people's posted questions and read what they have said. Add your own comments in response, if you have any.

12/17/09 FINAL ASSIGNMENT:

Finish your book and write your response to the questions below. Try to complete all of your work by Friday, January 8.
  • Write a review of this book. Try to use specific examples to back up your opinions. Things you might write about:
    • Did you like it, overall?
    • Did the ending surprise you?
    • Were you satisfied with the ending?
    • Is there anything else you want to say about the book?

12/13/09 Assignment #4:

This should be completed by Thursday, Dec. 17 -- not Friday.
Jacob, you still have one question to answer from assignment #2. Look at the one about the pictsies' speech and how it's written.

Both of you -- Read over the questions below. Then read pages 155 - 204. Post your answers in the discussion section. Then read the questions again to make sure you answered them completely.
  • The kelda tells Tiffany that what Wentworth wants is "sweeties" but what he needs is for adults to say "no" to him sometimes. Can you think of a time that it was very important for an adult to say no to something yo(or a brother or sister) wanted -- or wanted to do? Explain it with some detail, please. Why was it better for you -- or your sibling -- to get "no" for an answer?
  • To get the full effect of pages 178 - top of 179, you really have to read it aloud. Do that, and then write about your response to that short section.
  • One of you should explain what the real answer is to the question in assignment #3, about why there are so many male pictsies but only one female. The other one should explain why the job of being kelda is a lot more complicated (and upsetting) than Tiffany first understood. Whoever posts first gets to choose.
  • Why do you think that the pictsies didn't show Tiffany the way into the Queen's world, since they knew where it was all along?

12/05/09 Assignment #3:

This should be completed by Friday, Dec. 11.

First, go to the Discussion page and read through any questions that are not locked. I'm still waiting for more information from each of you on one of those questions -- one from Luke, one from Jacob.
When you complete your answers to last week's work, read through the questions below. Then read to the end of page 154. When you're finished, post your answers and work on your illustration. As you read, you could be looking for a scene that you'd like to illustrate and perhaps put in a bookmark so you can find it again easily.
  • Tell about a part of this story that you thought was funny. Give the page number(s) and explain why you thought it was funny.
  • Draw a scene from this section and hand it in on Friday. Use a quote from the book as a caption, and give the page number(s) that it came from.
  • Why do you think that there were so many male pictsies of all ages in the cave but just one female pictsie (at least that Tiffany has seen)?

11/28/09 Assignment #2:

This should be completed by Friday, Dec. 4.
First, read through the questions below. Then read to the end of the italics at the top of page 111.
  • "Speak up for those who don't have voices," [Granny Aching] always said (page 42). Can you think of any groups of people (or individuals) in our world today who "don't have voices" and for whom somebody should speak up? Explain as fully as you can.
  • Suppose you had to pay for each learning experience at Miquon with eggs, root vegetables, and the like. Which ones would you pay the most for, looking back over your time here? Be sure to explain why, at least in general terms. (page 49, among others)
  • Try reading some of the Pictsies' speech out loud. Read it exactly as it's written. Does it make more sense that way for you?
  • What is a Pict? Click here to read one website's description, which will open in a separate window. Then explain the difference between a Pict(sie) and a pixie.
  • Why did Granny Aching first ask the Baron for silver or gold when he came to plead for his dog and then say it would be no good? (pages 105-107)

11/22/09 Your first assignment:

Read to the end of page 40. Think about the characters you have met in that section.

Then add your responses to the questions below, which are in the DISCUSSION section.
This should be completed by the time you return to school on Monday, November 30.

Which ones seem like major characters?
Choose two or three characters and tell us what you understand about them.
Give your personal reactions to each of them . . . for example, if you like one of them, explain why.
